"Roald Dahl's Mother" Print
My contribution to Julia Rothman’s upcoming book (published with Chronicle) The Who, the What and the When: 65 Artists Illustrate the Secret Accomplices of History.
I was assigned Sofie Magdalene Hesselberg Dahl, mother of author Roald Dahl. Mrs. Dahl was Norwegian, remaining in Wales after her husband’s death to fulfill his wish that their children have a British education. Mrs. Dahl told her son stories based on the folklore of her homeland, and they exchanged hundreds of letters during his time at boarding school. Roald Dahl cites his mother as his primary inspiration as a storyteller.
